Ingredients

  • 10 Slices hearty rye sandwich bread
  • 2 T whole milk
  • 3/4 t onion powder
  • 1 1/4 t salt
  • 1/2 t pepper
  • 1 1/2 lb. 85% ground beef
  • 3 T unsalted butter
  • 2 onions, halved and sliced thin
  • 2 c. shredded Swiss cheese

Instructions

  1. Adjust oven rack to middle position and heat oven to 200 degrees.Tear 2 pieces of bread into 1/2 in, pieces.
  2. Mash together with milk,3/4 t salt and pepper and onion powder.
  3. Add beef and gently knead until well combined.
  4. Divide meat into 4 equal portions and shape into 6 by 4-in oval.
  5. Melt 1 T butter in large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat.
  6. Cook patties 5 minutes or until well browned.
  7. Repeat if pan is crowded.
  8. Transfer browned side up on large plate.
  9. Add onions and 1/2 t salt and cook until golden brown.
  10. 8-10 minutes.
  11. Arrange patties, browned side up, on top of onions along with juices .
  12. Reduce heat to medium and cook shaking pan occasionally, about 5 minutes.
  13. Divide 1 cup of cheese among 4 slices of bread.
  14. Top with patties, onions, remaining cheese and remaining bread.
  15. Wipe out skillet with paper towels.
  16. Melt 1 T butter in now empty skillet.
  17. Cook 3-4 in on each side.
  18. Serve
