Basic Slow Cooker Bar Soap Recipe
This recipe is from Charlene Potter who taught me how to make soap. It is a beautiful soap with no preservatives or additives. Take special care when working with lye and use protective glasses, gloves and mask.
Jeff Laun has made this 1 time!
Ingredients
453 grams (16 oz) Coconut oil
453 grams (16 oz) Olive oil
137 grams (4.8 oz) Lye
344 grams (12 oz) Distilled Water
1/2 - 2 oz essential oils (Optional)
Instructions
Pour the oils into the slow cooker
Heat slow cooker on high until the oil heats and the coconut oil melts, then turn to low.
While the oils are heating, measure lye and water separately
Pour water into a quart jar, slowly add the lye, stirring carefully.
** Wear safety glasses, mask and gloves whenever working with Lye **
Let the water/Lye mixture cool for 10 minutes until clear (not cloudy)
Slowly add the Water/Lye mixture to the oils in the crockpot
Stir until evenly mixed
Blend with stick blender (immersion blender) for 5 - 7 minutes until opaque in color and thickening to the texture of lemon curd
Original recipe says to cover crockpot and keep on low. Check in 15 minutes, after 30 minutes, it will thicken and the sides will be turning in, we found this unnecessary
Turn off heat
Add essential oils, if desired.
Line mold (10.5" x 4" mold) with wax paper or parchment paper
Spoon or pour into the mold
Cover mold with towel to keep the heat in
Let cool and rest for 24 hours
Remove from the mold and slice in 1 1/4" bars
You can use the soap after it cures for 30 days
Notes
This recipe make about 9 bars of soap.
Lye can be found at the hardware store
